April 2002 - Camel Games!
"A CAMEL game night?" you ask. "But how many games
are there about camels?" Well, check out these humped half-dozen
examples of camel competitions! (Remember, we've got about six gazillion
games in our collection, so about one in every gazillion games has
a camel theme)

The Sultan's palace is full of magical artifacts, but getting
them is no easy task! Five dragons hoard the treasures needed
to buy the artifacts, and the palace guard must be bested
or bribed. Each artifact gives its wielder a special ability,
but more power can be bought or traded for in the city. Just
remember, whenever two players have equal strength, or wish
to invoke their Genie's spells at the same time, priority
goes to the person who controls the almighty camel.

The wasteland of the desert is harsh and unforgiving. Lighten
it up with your pastel, candylike camels! (they look good
enough to eat!) Players extend their caravans through the
valley, camel-jockying for position. Will you reach the most
oases and waterholes? Enclose the largest area? Create the
longest caravan? Or will your opponents block you in the corner?

You start with 200 Piasters. You win when you have 500 Piasters.
Think it's easy to make a 300-Piaster profit? Well, you buy
goods at the oases, and sell goods at the cities. But cities
only buy certain goods, so you have to trade goods at the
nomad camps. But the nomad camps only carry certain goods,
and you can only move one space each turn, along certain routes,
unless you roll the die. But rolling the die costs Piasters...

(Is that Jack Nicholson?) Tiny caravans race across the tabletop
in this miniature game. Each turn, secretly choose how far
your camels will move. But if two players choose the same
number, they both lose a turn! And watch out when someone
plays a joker--if uncontested, they can rearrange the position
of the finish line!

In this auction game, players are merchants in the far future,
and camels are the only animals that aren't extinct. Better
get yours before they're gone! Bid on camels, build your herd,
and score points based on species (suit), caravan (straight),
or groups of three. Use your spit token to win an unclaimed
auction or bid again!

We did not playing this game: mostly because nobody
we know has it, and even if somebody did, I personally would
be a little afraid to try it. I just wanted to let you all
know it's out there. This was made back in 1966, and is a
relative of the Don't
Break the Ice and Crocodile
Dentist family of games. You set up the nice plastic camel,
and take turns putting the pick-up-sticks in the buckets on
the camel's back. Eventually, the weight becomes too much
AND THE CAMEL SNAPS IN TWO! OH, THE HUMANITY!! DOES THE ASPCA
KNOW ABOUT THIS?
