When in Rome...

Two thousand years ago, the Republic of Rome suffered through
revolt and unrest. Strong military leaders were needed. Julius
Caesar, a clever Senator and skilled orator, maneuvered himself
to the rank of consul in 59 B.C.E,
a position which gave him vast political power, as well as
the right to command armies. Military success followed political
success, and his popularity grew.
Realizing the threat of Caesar's
ego, the Senate ordered him to lay down his command and disband
his army. Instead, he invaded Italy, conquering Rome and quashing
rebellions in Egypt and Spain. Caesar ended Rome's civil war,
and, beloved by citizens and the military, became dictator-for-life...a
life extinguished in 44 B.C.E. when he
was murdered as he entered the Senate, stabbed 23 times. At
least sixty Senators were in on the assassination plot.
In the vacuum left by Caesar's
death, three powerful figures, Marc Anthony, M. Aemilius Lepidus,
and Octavian (Caesar's grand-nephew) formed a ruling triumvirate.
Convincing (or forcing) the Senate to grant them jurisdiction
over the Republic, they each governed a section of Rome.
In 36 B.C.E Lepidus was squeezed
out of the arrangement. Marc Anthony became enamored with
Cleopatra of Egypt and in 32 divorced his Roman wife (also
Octavian's sister) to marry his Queen of the Nile. Enraged
at the family insult and fearing Marc Anthony would lead the
forces of Egypt to conquer Rome, Octavian began mobilizing
armies. Though hundreds of Senators loyal to Marc Anthony
threw their support to Egypt, Rome was triumphant. Marc Anthony
and Cleopatra both committed suicide.
Fearing turmoil and desiring
the security of a strong leader, the Senate granted Octavian
the rank of Emperor. Octavian took
the name Augustus, meaning "revered." Thus began
the Roman Empire.
