Game Links
Funagain
Games
The amazon.com for games, except they have great customer service
and they're not bankrupt. From out-of-print searches of foreign
imports to the latest edition of Monopoly, this site has it all,
with new recommendations and reviews posted daily. While we urge
you to support your local game store, checking out funagain is a
must.
Boardgamegeek
A huge (and still growing!) database of games, searchable by title,
genre (mystery, science-fiction, prehistoric...), mechanic (trick-taking,
tile-laying, bidding...), number of players, and more. Many of the
listings include goodies like rules translations, player aid documents,
and reports of actual game sessions.
Game Surplus,
Boulder Games
Neither of these are as flashy as funagain.com, but sometimes their
prices are better, and occasionally they'll get ches of foreign
imports to the latest edition of Monopoly, this site has it all,
with new recommendations and reviews posted daily. While we urge
you to support your local game store, checking out funagain is a
must.
The Game Cabinet
Once the premier online magazine for boardgames, this site hasn't
been updated in over a year. But there's still lots of reviews,
variants, and FAQs for games released pre-October 2000.
The Games Journal
A monthly e-mag examining board and card games. Excellent content,
I only wish there was more of it each month.
Gaming Report
A great source of press releases, reviews, and rumors. The
site's focus is roleplaying games, but non-RPG games get thrown
a bone fairly frequently. There's so much good stuff here it's almost
daunting the first time you visit.
RPG.net, OgreCave
Two sites similar to Gaming Report. RPG.net has a much larger archive
of reviews and articles, while OgreCave tends to hear more fresh-from-the
street news and rumors straight off the grapevine.
The Puzzlemaster
If language mindbenders are your bag, Will Shortz, former editor
of Games Magazine and current crossword editor of the New York Times,
presents a weekly verbal puzzle every Sunday morning on National
Public Radio (KCRW 89.9 FM here in Los Angeles). Stretch your gray
cells over Will's current puzzle and see the last week's answers
here.
Dork Tower
Dork Tower is a comic about a bunch of game geeks, written and illustrated
by John Kovalic. It's printed in comic book form twice monthly from
Dork Storm Press, and can also be found in the pages of GAMES Magazine,
Dragon Magazine, and Scrye Magazine. Online, two strips appear each
week at gamespy.com,
while an additional strip appears every other week on the wizkidsgames
site. Brian says check 'em out: they're funny 'cause they're true.
eBay
Often the best place to find long out-of-print games, and bargains
on new or like-new releases.
You gotta love eBay.
There are also scads of free daily crossword sites. Use your favorite
search engine and find the style and difficulty of puzzle that's
right for you.
And don't forget to check out our FREE
GAMES section, with links to online rules for fun, free
stuff!
