Needles, founded in 1883, is one of the oldest living communities on the Colorado River. Needles rose out of the Mojave Desert, alongside the tracks of the Santa Fe Railroad. The vacant, but still majestic depot, was named for Padre Francisco Garces who first made contact with the native Mojave people in the 1770s.
