The Fairfax District is home to many Orthodox, Hasidic and Reform Jews and remains an intricate part of the city's Jewish community. You'll find dozens of shops ranging from art stores, antiques, boutiques, and salons next to large synagogues and kosher butchers. On Friday and Saturday nights just before sundown, the Jewish community comes to celebrate the Jewish sabbath, and you'll often see nicely dressed women as well as men in large wide-brimmed hats with prayer shawl fringe sticking out from under their jackets as they walk
to services.
