About Us: History
My People Connection began in August 1999, when founder Jen Tierney moved to Los Angeles. She knew no one but her coworkers, who were also eager to meet new people outside the office. To expand everyone's social circles and explore her new city, Jen invited her friends to join her for a night out every few weeks-dinners, movies, hiking, museums, happy hours-and asked that everyone bring one new person: a friend, acquaintance, neighbor, or relative. People enjoyed themselves so much that each new friend brought their own new friend next time. Within six months, Jen had sixty-four people RSVP for her Moroccan Dinner on Sunset Boulevard.
As participation grew, so did the demand for new events. Every outing inspired a brainstorming session for the next one, and each new person suggested some neat hiking trail, coffeehouse, bar, or art gallery that no one else had heard of. Suddenly there were several events each week, hosted by new friends all over Los Angeles. With the help of some programming friends and a book on web design, Jen created a website to organize her creation. Along with the site came an official name for the group: LA People Connection. Over the next few years, LA People Connection grew to be the largest FREE organization for friends in all of Southern California.
Members who moved from Los Angeles regretted that there was no LA People Connection in their new cities. In 2003, the group started online bulletin boards for events in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and other cities, sharing the LA People Connection ethic and offering advice for eager event hosts. In January 2005 these boards merged with the main website into a national events database, and LA People Connection was reborn as My People Connection, LLC.
My People Connection is 100% volunteer-run and supported, just as it's been since Jen was making reservations at the Moroccan restaurant. It's one of the few social organizations that is open to everyone--marathon runner and couch potato, surfer dude and corporate drone, every race, every belief, any age. The group is still expanding, with hundreds of events each month in dozens of cities across the country.
